Affordable Limbs for All (ALFA) Kenya is a community‑based prosthetics and rehabilitation initiative serving amputees and hearing‑impaired individuals in the Nairobi suburb of Ngong.
As part of MEND’s global network, ALFA provides affordable, custom-made prosthetic limbs, hearing aids, and essential rehabilitation support to people who would otherwise have no access to these life‑changing services.

Why ALFA Exists
Across Kenya, many families live below the poverty line. When someone loses a limb or struggles with hearing loss – often due to road accidents, infections, medical complications, or lack of early treatment – the impact is devastating.
Without mobility or hearing, individuals face:

ALFA was established to break this cycle by offering accessible prosthetic care and hearing support close to home.

What ALFA Provides
Custom Prosthetic Limbs
ALFA designs and fits prosthetic limbs tailored to each person’s needs, ensuring comfort, stability, and long-term mobility.
These modern, lightweight limbs are provided at low cost, with subsidies or free support available for families in extreme hardship.

- $25 provides aluminium crutches for a person waiting for their limb.
- $50 provides a child with club feet with boots and a bar fitted for nightly correction.
- $50 provides a new rubber prosthetic foot.
- $100 provides a new fibreglass socket or orthotic brace.

Rehabilitation and Gait Training
Every recipient receives personalised gait training to help them walk confidently with their new limb – a crucial step toward independence and returning to work, school, or daily life.
Hearing Aids for the Hearing‑Impaired
ALFA also provides affordable hearing aids to individuals with hearing loss – many of whom hear clearly for the very first time.
Often, these children, teens, and adults are treated as if they are completely deaf – but they’re not! They’re hearing‑impaired, and a simple low-cost hearing aid can transform their ability to communicate, learn, and participate in daily life.
